The Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF) was founded in 2012 by Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty in honor of her grandparents, Clara and Lionel Braithwaite. Growing up in Barbados, Rihanna saw firsthand the unique challenges faced by communities of color and created CLF to support various social justice initiatives and prepare Caribbean communities to withstand natural disasters.
Over the course of the decade, CLF has funded education, health, and climate-related projects from Barbados to Burkina Faso.
We’re not only funding innovative climate justice and climate resiliency programs around the world — we’re redefining what is possible within philanthropy.
Our collaborative efforts with partners have allowed us to address global injustices and provide support for climate and social justice initiatives.
Going forward, we see the opportunity to map new pathways that will help position CLF for ever-increasing positive impact. One goal in particular is to approach our work through a lens of intersectionality — viewing categories such as gender, race, and class as overlapping rather than isolated when looking at systemic inequalities. This will ensure our grantmaking tackles multiple social injustices whenever possible.
